Norse Poems

(1981)
Based On a Translation By Paul B.taylor
A collection of stories by

This complete collection of Auden's renderings of the traditional poetry of Iceland - including 23 previously unpublished poems - is an important addition to the Auden canon. Working from a literal translation by Paul Taylor, and able to read Icelandic himself, Auden succeeded in capturing in his verse the rhythmic quality of the Icelandic original, its alliteration and its stress. Auden's interest in Icelandic poetry dates from his Oxford days and was strengthened by a visit in the thirties, which led to the Letters from Iceland (1937). After a second visit in 1965, he and Paul Taylor embarked on these English versions of the important Icelandic traditional poetry, dating from the tenth to the thirteenth century.
