Best-selling author Patrick Robinson writes as Spike Bailey in this story of a young pitching talent who loses his ability to pitch and struggles to find it again, set against the backdrop of the glorious Cape Cod Baseball League. Jack Faber is a young hotshot pitcher from St. Charles College in Louisiana, and his first two years there were of such impact that he was scouted by no fewer than six coaches form America's leading College Baseball League, the famed summer league on Cape Marlin (a stand-in for Cape Cod) off the coast of New England. There the best young ballplayers in the United States have spent their summers for more than fifty years, and reputations are won and lost-for nine weeks in the high summer, it is besieged by Major League scouts. His first summer is a terrific one, with perhaps the best pitching performances anyone has ever seen both by his team, the Seapuit Seawolves and the league in general. He returns home a hero. But things begin to unravel when St. Charles's new coach will not brook any "prima donna" behaviour. He slowly suffocates Faber's desire and enthusiasm to a point that Faber cannot trust himself to throw a pitch. His junior year ends in shame and he decides to hang up his cleats. But the Seawolves want him back, and Jack returns to beautiful Cape Marlin-not only to find his pitching ability but himself.
